I was looking for a great Central Oregon Spring hike for my new family that was short, sweet, and had some views. Chimney Rock near Prineville Oregon was perfect! Follow directions to Chimney Rock Campground, and go across Highway 27 to the trail head. It was a fantastic spring hike with minimal crowds where we brought our two dogs and enjoy the gradual switch backs up to the top. The climb was not too steep, but a good amount of climbing to feel the burn and get a little work out in!
We put our 5 month old in The ErgoBaby 360 for the hike which was a good choice. It is definitely not stroller friendly. I would suggest this hike for families with older toddlers and children since the gravel was lose and a bit slippery, with some big drop offs to the side of the trail. But the views do not disappoint! Gorgeous mountain views when you reach the partial top.
There’s a bench you can enjoy about 3/4 to the top when most of the climbing is done. Then continue on to Chimney Rock! I would say it was moderate difficulty, of course I had my dogs pulling me up! It is an out and back 2.7 mile hike that was the perfect amount for our baby.
Afterwards we walked across Highway 27 to the Chimney Rock Campground where there was a nice pier into the Crooked River with a picnic table and we let our dogs take a dip and cool off. We circled through Prineville on the way back, stopping at Ochoco Brewing Company for a delicious burger and beer.
